Your resume and cover letter are MARKETING DOCUMENTS. They are the only thing representing you in your absence. Think about it this way: When you are reading an advertisement, what do you look for? I'll bet it's the benefits of selecting that brand or product. Turn that analogy around, and you can see how critical it is to promote your benefits to a potential employer.

What are the buying motivators for a potential organization? They will review your resume to see if you:

Can make money for the company

Can save money for the company

Can streamline procedures to make operations more efficient

Can save time

Can solve problems

Can improve customer relations and keep existing customers happy

Can help increase business and attract new clients

If your resume doesn't show how well you can do these things, employers will not be motivated to retain your services. It's that simple. You WOW potential employers by including relevant accomplishments in your resume. For example, if you know the position requires customer relations skills, you would incorporate things like:

* Boosted customer satisfaction ranking from #8 to #1 across 15 branches within 6 months.

Or

* Secured a customer retention rate of 90%, the highest of all company divisions, by implementing an effective follow-up and problem-resolution campaign.

Notice how these points are selling the reader, not telling the reader. They've already passed on so many "increased customer service" resumes. Liven-up your resume and get employers excited by showing some concrete numbers and percentages. No matter what profession you are in, the reader of your resume needs to see the "buy motivators" to get him or her to pick up the phone. Convince the reader that the company needs you by showing what you've done for past companies. Remember, "Past behavior predicts future behavior."

Think hard about your past, and you will come up with many great accomplishments. When clients retain our services, they often tell us that they don't have any accomplishments. After completing our profession-specific worksheets, that all changes because they've taken the time to ask themselves the important questions.
